Bio
Hello, I’m João Lazaro, a Brazilian filmmaker and educator born in Santa Catarina in 1992 and now based in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK.
With a BA in Visual Arts (2018) and an MRes in Education (2021), my work merges creative vision with a passion for education, focusing on filmmaking, video production, and educational project management.
I work full-time at Newcastle University in an innovative learning environment through content development and technology-based teaching enhancement.
My creative practice is rooted in community storytelling. I am passionate about community filmmaking, facilitating workshops, and collaborating with diverse groups to craft meaningful short films and documentaries.
Recognized with awards, including a Contemporary Artist Prize in 2018 and a Cultural Contributions Award in 2020, my expertise spans Video Editing, Animation, Teaching, and Project Management. Through my workshops, I’ve supported emerging filmmakers, many of whom now lead their ventures in the media field.
I am also an active volunteer at the Star and Shadow Cinema and a member of Newcastle Film Club, where I continue to explore the power of collective storytelling and independent cinema. Inspired by the artistry of directors like the Coen Brothers, I am drawn to the authenticity of documentaries, interviews, and video essays.
Beyond my professional pursuits, I find joy in cycling and capturing my experiences through vlogs and short films while continually refining my skills in scriptwriting and editing. I’m committed to creating evocative visual narratives and collaborating on projects that resonate with communities and audiences alike.
